Operation of Szigliget Castle

The historic monument is owned by the Hungarian State and has been operated by the Municipality of Szigliget since July 1, 2008. Previously, the operational tasks were carried out by the Castle Foundation. On behalf of the municipality, the tasks related to operation are coordinated by Mayor Dániel Balassa. Construction and maintenance work is supervised by architect József Paál, who also performs technical inspection duties. The shared goal of the municipality and all involved professionals is to elevate the cultural offerings and enhance the role of heritage tourism in the village’s tourism portfolio. For the people of Szigliget, important aspects of castle operation include: Ensuring clean and orderly conditions for visiting guests Creating a safe visitor environment Providing a variety of programs Establishing affordable entrance fees Continuous development Launching services that fit the castle’s atmosphere The municipality’s efforts have paid off. In 2011, Szigliget Castle became the most visited castle in Hungary. The municipality is deeply committed to the fate of the castle, as evidenced by its successful application for funding, securing nearly 300 million forints for development through the New Széchenyi Plan. While maintaining the castle’s condition and developing it for tourism purposes has been ongoing in recent years, these smaller-scale improvements were always funded from the limited municipal budget. The grant will be used not only for preserving built heritage and presenting it to the community, but also for expanding tourism services and attractions. As a result of these developments, the castle and its historical “life” will be presented in a more spectacular and realistic way. It will become more accessible for families and cyclists, and special attention will be given to people with disabilities, who will receive auditory and visual stimuli about the castle through audiovisual aids.
